Reading: This week, we will begin our next unit, Becoming Experts at Reading Nonfiction.
Phonics: This week we will be learning about r controlled vowels (er, ir, ur). Since the sound is the same for all three of these, this week, your child will need to learn how to spell the following words for this week's test: fern, girl, temper, sir, insert, dirt, adverb, urban, turn, Bert, hunter, and third. Red words: emergency, practice, room, sure Red words need to be read fluently and spelled correctly. Language Arts: irregular verbs (come-came, begin-began, grow-grew) Writing: We will continue to work on nonfiction writing. Math: We will continue to learn about measurement. We have discussed the different tools for measuring items (rulers, yard sticks, measuring tape). We have been working on estimating the length of objects and measuring the length using inches. Science: We will continue to learn about matter. This week, we are learning about the changes in matter. Reading: This week, we will review what we have learned from our first literary unit (elements of the story, central message/theme, sequencing the story, how the characters respond to events, etc.

Language Arts: verbs Writing: We will begin our next writing unit, informational Math: We will start our next unit, measurement. This week, students will learn about estimating the length of objects and then select the correct tool to measure objects. Science: We will continue to learn about matter. Reading: This week, we will work on identifying the central message/moral of the story. Phonics: We will learn about open and closed syllables. An open syllable ends with a vowel sound that is spelled with a single vowel letter (a, e, i, o, or u). Examples include me, e/qual, pro/gram, mu/sic. A closed syllable has a short vowel ending in a consonant. Examples include hat, dish, bas/ket. Red words: add find going home Red words need to be read fluently and spelled correctly. Language Arts: Nouns Review Writing: We will revise, edit, and publish our personal narrative small moment story. Math: We will continue practicing skip counting by 5, 10's and 100's. You can practice this at home or while riding in the car. Example, 274, 284, 294, 304, 314. We will review for the unit 1 test. Practice Problems need to be completed as homework and should be brought back and forth to school. Monday: Problems 1-6 Tuesday: Problems 7-13 Wednesday: Problems 14-19 Thursday: No homework Social Studies: Unit 1 test on Wednesday, September 15th. Study guides were sent home last Wed. Science: We will begin Unit 1 States of Matter on Thursday.
Reading: We will identify the conflict in the story and how the characters respond to major events and challenges in a story.
Phonics: We will learn about the suffix ed (It makes 3 sounds, /d/ as in played, /t/ as in asked, and /id/ as in planted. Red words: before, hurt, night, sleep, should Red words need to be read fluently and spelled correctly. Language Arts: Plural nouns (adding s, es, or ies) Writing: We will continue to work on writing our personal narrative small moment stories. Math: We will continue unit 1. This week, we will learn about comparing numbers using <,>,and = signs. On Thursday, we will learn to skip count by 5's, 10's and 100's from any given number up to 1,000. You can practice this at home or while riding in the car. Example, 274, 284, 294, 304, 314. The Unit 1 Test will be September 17th. Practice questions will be sent home on September 10 (Your child does not have to do these over the weekend! We send home Study Guides/Practice Problems one week prior to a test). Social Studies: We are continuing our first unit in Social Studies. We will continue to learn about the five regions of Georgia (Appalachian Platea, Valley and Ridge, Blue Ridge, Piedmont and the Coastal Plains. A study guide for the Unit 1 test will be sent home this Wednesday. Unit 1 Test will be on September 15th. |
