Reading: We are continuing our fiction unit. This week, we are working identifying the character, their traits, and how they respond to major events in a story.
Phonics: Red words: be, so, where, there Red words need to be read fluently and spelled correctly. This week we are learning that y can make the long i sound when the word is a one syllable word as in cry, fly, try, and shy. It can also make the long e sound when it is at the end of a two syllable word as in baby, lazy, flimsy, plenty, etc. Language Arts: We are working on capitalization of holidays, product names, and geographic names. Writing: We are working on narrative writing. Math: We are continuing unit 3. If you would like to look over what we are learning in this unit, please visit the "curriculum" tab, math, enhanced unit 3 parent letter. It will explain all the standards in this unit and how your child will learn the material. This week, we will continue to learn addition strategies for double digit numbers. We will also begin learning how to solve word problems. In the upcoming weeks, we will learn about coins. It would be beneficial to review the coins with your child, so they can identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. We'll teach them how to count the coins, but learning how to identify coins is the first step. There are fun ways to do this: search for coins around the house (couch, laundry, under the bed, etc.), dump out the coins from your pockets or wallets, or dump out coins from junk drawers. Have your child tell you the coin and it's value. Have them sort them into piles of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. Make it fun for them. Science: We will start our unit on force and motion. Have your child give you an example of a push and a pull. Let them tell you what they've learned about friction. Reading: We are back to fiction for Unit 3. This week we will determine Point Of View in order to understand characters in a fiction story. We are reading folktales and fables. We are also practicing speaking in different voices while reading dialogue between characters in a fiction story.
Reading: Since school was closed on Friday, our unit assessment will be Monday, November 8th. On Tuesday, we begin our new unit in Fiction, where we will dig deeper into recounting stories and determining theme next week.
